Kata-is a Japanese word describing the detailed pattern of movements. The practitioner is counselled to visualize the enemy attacks and their responses. Karateka “read” a kata(kata bunkai) in  order to explain the imagined events. There are perhaps 100 katas across the various forms of karate, with many minor variations. In Goju ryu style there is 10 traditional katas and 2 promotional katas (gekisai dai ichi/ni).
